I was working diligently in my office / extra bedroom / junque repository,
and spotted one of my favorite things
hanging on the bedpost
Pink toe shoes!
These were given to me by a dear friend.
She'd come across an old stash of them in storage;
unfortunately most of them were water-damaged.
but she salvaged a few, added dainty embellishments
~ and I was the happy recipient of a pair.
~ and I was the happy recipient of a pair.
While they are unique and loveable in their own right,
the thing that makes them a favorite for me
is what she wrote on the bottom.
"A gift so you can dance thru life"
Well...I'm tryin'
this post prompted me to go a-digging, and look what I found!
These are my sweet little ballet class slippers from C1956
I took ballet lessons for a very short while
from renown ballerina Audry Share.
An online article said
"Miss Share, immigrating to America from England, settled in Long
Beach with her husband in 1956
and for twenty five years owned and operated the very first
Royal Academy ballet school in Southern
California.
During that quarter century the school served as training
ground
for such notables as Yoko Ichino and Bobby Burgess,
not to
mention a huge segment of the Long Beach population."
(that would be me)
I'm not sure why my ballet days were so short-lived, but they were memorable
and obviously I loved my little slippers.
I remember keeping my leotard for a long time too. hmmm.
and obviously I loved my little slippers.
I remember keeping my leotard for a long time too. hmmm.
I did, however, go on to have many ballroom dance lessons
with none other than the aforementioned Bobby Burgess
from Mickey Mouse Club fame.
We all had a crush on him, and nearly melted into the floor
when he asked us to dance.
when he asked us to dance.
In a melancholy moment, once upon a time, I wrote this little poem ~
I have no daughter to give these to
to tell of giggles and leotards
of Audry Share and plies
A time remembered so fondly, clearly.
(sniffle)
Sheesh. And on that happy note, I'll get off the stage.

As someone with two left feet...I admire your ballerina memories. Such sweet and lovely slippers, my friend.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

Love the poem, Susy - it is heartfelt, that's for sure!!
ReplyDeleteThe toe shoes your friend gave you are so lovely and the story about your very own ballet shoes is even lovelier!
I always wanted to take ballet - it wasn't meant to be.

What a neat favorite thing! I love dance shoes and your gift from your friend is so special!
ReplyDeleteHow nice to write on the shoe bottom-- clever girl!! Very pretty shoes too.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a daughter either...I understand the poem too. )o:
ReplyDeleteAll that this post was missing was a photo of you as a little ballerina!
What a lovely post. I've never danced but I would love to dance through life. Who wouldn't? :-) I must keep this idea for a gift in mind. Have a nice weekend and thank you for sharing your memories. Regula
ReplyDeleteI love that you hang them from your bedpost. Ballet, it seems, is every little girl's dream.

Awww! What a treasure and nice message your friend wrote on the bottom. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and nice comment on the necklace.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend.
Hey girl, I like you on the stage--this was so delightful. I love getting to know more about my bloggy buddies.
ReplyDeleteIt is so amazing that you still have your toe shoes. And that little poem is so sweet. But you do have a daughter don't you?
ReplyDeleteThe pink toe shoes are a sweet gift from a friend. Reminds me of my oldest granddaughters first on point shoes. They were pink and so pretty too. Wish she was still pursuing ballet.
Anyway...I remember Bobby Burgess on Micky Mouse Club and on Lawerence Welk too. He had a sister that I think went to my High School, Poly. (maybe wrong about that??)
Those white slippers are so beautful, Suzy, and what a lovely sentiment attached to them from your friend. And I'm glad to see someone else keeps mementos like that from their childhood! We still have the costumes I danced in as a child. Good grief!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post this is, and what a wonderful friend to give you those slippers.
ReplyDeleteI think you are a "notable," leotards or no leotards! I did not realize that you rubbed shoulders and danced with such illustrious celebrities!
ReplyDeleteI love the soul on the soles. Definite keepers!
