Metamorphosis

I'm hearing from a number of people that they're fasting in January ~
for spiritual reasons.  Some are seeking direction or a desired outcome, and others want to become more sensative to the inner voice of The Lord.

In November of 2008 I went on a 52 day fast, and it changed my life.

It all started on a Sunday morning at church when my pastor taught that if we felt "stuck" in our circumstances, we needed to change the way we think.  He referred to the scripture that says, in part, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed  by the renewing [complete renovation] of your mind".

Wow! 52 days, you say.  "How'd you do it?"  Well, it wasn't a fast from food ~ it was a fast from wrong thinking.

On this particular Sunday I determined I was going to spend extra time every morning fellowshipping with the Father, reading the bible and studying.  I started the next day, and was soon led to the book of Nehemiah.  As you recall, he oversaw the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem in 52 days. I knew my fast was to last 52 days.

Interestingly one of the first insights I gained was about finances and the kingdom principle of seed time and harvest.  On  the second day I made the huge decision to close my retails stores, after eighteen years of business. I went to my friend's office and sobbed.  Although I knew it was what I was supposed to do, I was grieving the "loss"and didn't know what to do next or what the future held.  My thoughts ran between excitement, fear, faith, and panic.

Every day I diligently got up extra early and spent time transforming my thoughts (and my words) until they eventually conformed to God's word.  There were many days of wrestling, tears, and doubt ~ but about the half-way mark (as I looked back) I began to see a shift in my thinking and my faith started gaining traction. I began believing for the seemingly impossible.  At the end of the 52 days my heart had been established and there was a wall of protection built around it that no fear, doubt, or unbelief can penetrate.

What I learned during those precious days became the foundation of what I needed for moving out of the old and into the new.   It's kept me anchored, focused, and moving forward.  Today I'm able to say

A heart that trusts forever sings
And feels as light as it had wings
A well of peace within it springs
Come good or ill
Whate'er to-day, to-morrow brings
It is thy will.

I'll be flitting over to Spiritual Sundays

  2. Boy, can I relate. And, there's nothing like a huge leap of faith and a change of scenery to transform any stinkin' thinkin'. God is at work. And, I must say that I can see how this 52 day fast has changed you. It's inspiring.

    Thank-you, Friend!

  3. I have read this post for three mornings in a row. And I love it. And I will probably read it again. This line jumped out to me about fasting..."it was a fast from wrong thinking." It's so easy to fall into that habit and I know that isn't what God wants from me. And the butterfly is the perfect visual for a new beginning!

  4. Our pastor led our church on a 30 day negativity fast a few years ago. Hubby and I blew it the first day...and the second...and the third...and so on, and so on. We kept catching ourselves saying negative things.

We, and a lot of others in our congregation, entered our church that next Sunday morning feeling somewhat like failures, having blown it so many times. Our pastor encouraged us to stick with it, and assured us it was indeed working, as we were gaining a newfound awareness of just how much negativity comes out of our mouths. We were learning to guard our tongues.

Your post has encouraged me to begin a new fast.

  11. Hello Suzy, you did a very brave thing, changing as you did. What a wonderful fast!!!I wonder if you have read that classic, 'In His Steps.' God took the reins in my life 3 yrs ago and turned me right around. I kicked hard and held on but gave in in the end and here I am today. Letting go and letting God is what we all say we want to do, and yet, it is hard to let Him take complete control.. God Bless you. A wonderful encouraging sharing. xx

  12. I did a similar thing 2 years ago only my fast was for 40 days and it was a fast from my computer. I spent more time in prayer and reading. I kept a journal of all 40 days and put it on my blog. I can't begin to tell you how the Lord worked with me and gave me spiritual food during that time. I was a changed person after that. Some people scoffed at me because fasting is supposed to be food. But my response and my heartfelt belief is that God will honor any attempt to deny the self in order to get closer to Him. God bless you my friend, Dr. Bobbi

  13. Wow! The power of prayer and fasting. You sought the Lord's direction with your whole heart and He blessed you. What a joy to be free from fear and doubtful thoughts.
But it shows that we have to be willing to do whatever it takes to break bad patterns in our lives.
You made a tremendous sacrifice in giving up your business but the reward far exceeded what you gave up.
Thank you for sharing this tremendous testimony of the Lord's working in your life.
    Blessings,
    Janis

  16. O, sweetheart...my heart skipped a beat when I thought you meant 52 days without food. O my...

I am a FIRM believer that negative thinking is a big reason for all the heartache in our country. It can become such a habit..just like fussing and bickering.
I am so proud of you for recognizing this and I am joining right along with you. If I start to have a negative thought, I'll stop myself and try to right the wrong.
