Every Fall we like to take a family outing to "apple country" that's about an hour's drive away. We have our favorite orchard. I'm hoping it's still open this year, because everything there is old. It's owned by a couple in their eighties, that grow "antique" apples, and have a horse that's something like 36 years old - although I didn't see him last time.Mrs. W sells antiques (at least she did); Mr. W gives out samples of the apples. You can't just buy the apples from him, you have to sample the varieties -- all of them. It's a rule. If you time it right, you can buy cider made on the antique apple press. One year we got to make our own on the hand-cranked press, and saved it in the freezer for Thanksgiving.

Mr. W once told me the story of how he got started, and the old-timer from the neighboring orchard that had mentored him. He said the old fellow loved his orchard and had worked it for a life-time. One day the daughter came to visit. He wasn't in the house, so she went out to the orchard to look for him. He was there, sitting on the ground leaning against one of his trees. He had passed away with an apple branch in his hand. That story has always been inspiring to me. I hope to enter Heaven with my apple branch in my hand too - having done exactly what I was created to do, not departing from my "life path". I've been spending time with the Path Planner - just to be sure I'm in the right orchard producing the right fruit.

Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life.

Hi Susy - thanks for visiting my blog. I love what you're doing on this one - how so much of what's important to you is showing through. Lovely words and great pictures. My blog is intended to be more about places I love than about me. Even so, who we are comes through. That's the lovely thing about blogging, seeing we're all different and yet connected.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post...I love the story. I sometimes wonder if I am on the right path at all. Will I get to heaven with a camera around my neck? God has blessed me with it, that's for sure. You commented that you saw some great cottages from links from my blog. I have been fascinated by the places blog friends travel to or live. I have been starting my days lately with coffee at the computer and traveling the world on my computer. Each place is fascinating, just like your orchard here.
ReplyDeleteLovely message - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethis feels comforting...love that story of her husband dying with the apple branch in his hand. When I die...I want to die too with the apple branch in my hand...the one he's asked me to carry....love the post.
ReplyDelete:) Enjoyed this post... my husband and I used to live in the "Apple Capital of the World"- Wenatchee, Washington. His parents had a small orchard. So, we have many memories of the apple harvest.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spiritual Sunday!
This is a lovely post. My husband and I were vacationing in New Mexico one year during the apple harvest and we passed by several apple orchards.
ReplyDeleteI too want to pass from this world doing what the Father has called me to do.
Blessings,
Joan

ReplyDeleteThis post brings back memories. When we lived in CA I loved going to Apple Hill in the fall with a group from our church. Nothing else quite like it.

What a great post. I know we are all on a path. It is the path. There is only one that leads to Eternal Life. So we walk along side each other at times and then at others we walk ahead or behind. Everyone we meet has something to enrich our walk with the Lord and we have something to enrich their lives. We know we are on the path because the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit. God bless you, Dr. Bobbi Jo

What a wonderful story! Boy, this really hit home. Lately, I feel like I've climbed that tree but I'm too afraid to reach out and grab the branch for fear it will break and I'll come tumbling down. Thanks for giving me so much to think about this week. Hugs and blessings, Nan
